From ball gowns to A-line styles and eye-catching trendy styles — the variety of styles is truly mind-blowing. Not to mention, you will have to choose from a variety of fabrics and textures too. Most brides-to-be can’t help but feel confused and not sure where to start. We meet a lot of brides who feel overwhelmed and do not know what styles they like. Here’s why we have compiled some valuable tips to guide you through the process and ensure you find the perfect gown for your Big Day.

1. Don't Wait Until the Last Minute
Start early! I cannot stress this enough. Typically, it takes us about four to seven months to design and make your custom wedding gown. If you are buying a dress from a store but they do not have your size, it takes about 4 months to get your dress produced. But that is just half of the process. You should also consider additional alterations, which usually take another two months. So when is exactly the right moment to begin the process of making your wedding dress? To avoid unnecessary stress, start six to nine months before the wedding. Trust me, you won't regret this decision!
2. Do Your Research
You will find it very helpful when you learn about fabrics and silhouettes. This way, terms like A-line, fit-and-flare, crinoline, organza, and applique won’t scare you even a bit. Plus, it’ll be easier for you to convey what style and design you like. Try to understand what you like! Explore Pinterest for ideas, and check out specialized magazines for inspiration. It’s also great to start saving pictures of dresses that appeal to you. If you are having your dress custom made or buying a mass-produced dress from a store, and you are ready to start shopping, take the pictures with you. And remember: the dress is the reflection of the bride, so stay true to yourself.
3. Keep Your Venue and Wedding Theme In mind
Questions you should ask yourself as you begin to think of what dress style to pick should border around functionality, comfort, and appropriateness. Questions like “Will I be having a traditional wedding celebration or something more informal? “What dress styles go with the theme of my wedding? For example, if you’re planning to exchange vows in a chapel, look for a chapel-appropriate gown. Avoid dresses that are too short, too revealing, or ones that look like they could be worn to a cocktail party. And what if you are considering buying a ballgown with long trains but you are having your ceremony on a sandy beach? That would be awkward and mismatched with your venue! So make sure to choose a dress that fits the venue and theme of your wedding.
4. Be Open-minded
When starting the process of having your dress custom made to your preferred style and design, or if you are visiting the bridal stores, keep an open mind and listen to your dress designer or consultant. They have years of experience behind their backs and know the deal. Don’t hesitate to try on dresses that might not seem like your style. Why? At times brides-to-be fall for gowns they’ve never even considered. Some dresses do not look very appealing on the hanger but might win you over once tried on. However, always put your feelings first! Never let yourself be talked into buying a dress you have doubts about. Finding your dream gown is not easy and takes time, so be patient and don’t give up.
5. Forget About the Sizing Numbers
When visiting bridal stores an important rule is focusing on the fit instead of the size because bridal sizing runs small. Wedding dresses are often two sizes higher than your usual one. If you wear size 8, you may need a 12. Even if you plan on slimming down before the wedding, shop true to your current measurements. Otherwise, there's a risk of being left with a dress that doesn't fit well. Either way, don’t be too harsh on yourself! Whatever the number, nobody at the wedding will know it but you :)
